Abstract

SEPULVEDA MONTENEGRO, Eliana Lucía. From La caridad to Almacén de los niños: Heroic and Mythical Representations in Colombian Periodicals for Children in the 19 th Century. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2021, vol.23, n.2, pp.47-73.  Epub July 19, 2021. ISSN 0123-5931.  https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v23n2.94884.

The nineteenth-century and literary Colombian press for children had a special development since 1870. Years before, the newspapers El mosaico, Biblioteca de señoritas, and later the children's page of La mujer paved the way by publishing texts for children. This article will address two topics: a discussion regarding the concept of children's literature -in light of the concept of childhood-; and a description of the types of heroes featured in the nineteenth-century press for children, specifically the model of the liberator and the Virgin Mary as mythical heroes. At the heart of these issues is the importance of editorial production that is part of children's literature and the necessity of including periodicals for children in historical and historiographic research. In this sense, this article is part of the investigation around nineteenth-century children's literature in Colombia, still largely unexplored.

Keywords : Colombia; childhood; children's press; 19th century.
