It is necessary to manage harmonics to obtain energy quality in distribution systems. Therefore, this article aimed to evaluate the use of passive filters as a viable alternative for harmonic management in medium voltage electrical distribution networks with high industrial load. To do this, the Total Harmonic Distortion Indices were analyzed, which were calculated and graphed with Matlab software. First, a case study was proposed based on the 34-node IEEE distribution network. Later, four simulation scenarios were defined that allow the integration of capacitor banks, rejection reactances, and harmonic sources. Based on a mathematical design, the daily harmonic load flow for each hour was analyzed, and rejection reactance design mechanisms were proposed as a complement to traditional power factor correction solutions based on capacitor banks. The results showed that the use of passive LC filters can be highly effective for the management of voltage harmonic distortion, but insufficient for the elimination of current harmonic distortion. However, this type of filters does show complete effectiveness in limiting harmonic amplification (both voltage and current) when using capacitor banks for power factor correction in systems with harmonic problems. Concluding that LC passive filters with rejection reactors mitigate voltage harmonics even if there are capacitor banks and sources of harmonics, which makes them the most feasible, effective, and economical way to obtain energy quality.
