Abstract

ARIZA, John; SALDARRIAGA, Juan Pablo  and  RETAJAC, Alexander. Pandemic and Poverty in Colombia. Territ. [online]. 2023, n.49spe, 12852.  Epub Feb 04, 2024. ISSN 0123-8418.  https://doi.org/10.12804/revistas.urosario.edu.co/territorios/a.12852.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted multiple economic and social dimensions of the population. Governments, in response to the decline in household income and the subsequent impacts on poverty, have created or strengthened monetary transfer programs. The objective of this article is to study the incidence of income from institutional aid on the levels of monetary poverty in households in Colombia. Methodologically, we estimate a Logit econometric model to analyze the correlation between institutional monetary aid and the probability of being poor before and during the pandemic. The data come from the Employment, Poverty and Inequality official database (Mesep) for the years 2002, 2018, 2019 and 2021. The results indicate that the increase in poverty levels during the pandemic occurred fundamentally in the sector urban. Econometric estimates suggest that the external aid received by households reduces the probability of being poor, although this marginal effect decreases over time.
