CALONGE REILLO, Fernando. People Who Have a Car But Don't Use it. An Open Window to Urban Sustainability. Territ. [online]. 2024, n.50, e7.  Epub 29-Fev-2024. ISSN 0123-8418.  https://doi.org/10.12804/revistas.urosario.edu.co/territorios/a.12632.

Scholars have shown that the number of cars, and car use will grow as socioeconomic conditions improve in Latin America. This situation will threaten sustainability in the main cities of the region. This article investigates daily car use determinants for people with access to cars. Urban sustainability would not be so endangered if people with access to cars forego such vehicles for commuting. The article resort to the Population and Housing Census 2020 in Mexico to research how heads of households with access to cars commute in a daily basis. It is discovered that low socio-economic status increases the likelihood of not using the family car for commuting, along with environmental awareness, particularly for affluent heads of households. Therefore, it can be assumed that environmental awareness could refrain car use once national and domestic economies improve in Latin America.

Palavras-chave : Urban sustainability; car availability; car use; commuting; travel behaviour.
