Abstract
ALBERNAZ, Maria Paula. Time, Space and Transformations: Contradictions and Resistance in the Railway Suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. Territ. [online]. 2025, n.52spe, a14540. Epub Aug 15, 2025. ISSN 0123-8418. https://doi.org/10.12804/revistas.urosario.edu.co/territorios/a.14540.
The research shows the effects of industrial legacy and renewed socio-spatial relations in suburban territories, emphasizing the economic, urban, and environmental transformations initially derived from developmentalist and later neoliberal policies. These dynamics call for a review of the traditional perspective associated with these territories, observing fragmented logics revealed in the reuse of industrial spaces stripped of their original function, promoted by different agents with conflicting interests and strategies. The research is centred on the railway suburbs of the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, a priority area in national industrialization in which intense deindustrialization took place. The emphasis is on the products of the reconversion of industrial remnants by people who, in the face of difficulties, struggle to remain in areas with better infrastructure. These reconversions reveal the contradictions arising from hegemonic crises, as well as the emergence of resistance among socioeconomically vulnerable groups.
Keywords : Deindustrialisation; suburban conversions; capitalist contradictions; neoliberalism; community resistance.
