Abstract

RAUSCH, Gisela Ariana. The City and the Sedimentation of its Dreams: Santa Fe (Argentina) and Images of its Periphery. rev.estud.soc. [online]. 2011, n.40, pp.89-100. ISSN 0123-885X.

San José del Rincón and Alto Verde are two nodes of urban settlement on the outskirts of Santa Fe. Their names evoke very different images, juxtaposed desires, and colors as contrasting as the conditions of their respective origins. Although the histories of both are tightly connected to the urban center, they run along different paths. This urban center will be the place where large numbers of images and ideas about them are produced, and which, in some ways, will fill the paucity of knowledge about its history, land, and people. Analyzing part of the local cultural production, such as newspapers, works of literature and painting, this article tries to understand, from the perspectives of urban history and cultural studies, the production of images and imaginaries about Rincón and Alto Verde. On the one hand, it provides an overview of the transformations and the specific modes in which imaginaries have defined both places. On the other, it investigates the imaginary construction of territories in general.
