IZCARA PALACIOS, Simón Pedro. The Contraction of Migrant-Smuggling Networks in Mexico. rev.estud.soc. [online]. 2014, n.48, pp.84-99. ISSN 0123-885X.
Both the official and the academic discourse argue that migrant smuggling along the border between Mexico and the United States is an increasingly complex and lucrative business that requires the operation of extensive networks with ties to organized crime. The results of this study, based on a qualitative methodology that includes in-depth interviews with 115 smugglers of migrants describe a different scenario. Smugglers of migrants have to share their profits with new actors; as a result, some migrant-smuggling networks have been forced to lay off some of their members to reduce operating costs while other networks have decided not to hire more people in order to maintain the profitability of the business.
