Abstract

BUITRAGO ARROYAVE, Luisa Fernanda  and  LOPEZ LEZAMA, Jesús María. Assessing the technical impacts of distributed generation on electrical power systems. Tecnura [online]. 2013, vol.17, n.36, pp.50-60. ISSN 0123-921X.

An assessment of the technical impacts of distributed generation (DG) on electric power systems is presented in this paper. In order to quantify the impacts of DG on electric networks, four indices have been proposed, which assess aspects such as active power losses, reactive power losses, voltage profile and congestion. These indices are dimensionless and compare the network operation with and without DG. Such indices represent a decision-supporting tool for the network operator. To evaluate the impact of DG on the network, two testing systems of 13 and 34 busses are considered. An exhaustive evaluation considering all possible DG locations is presented. The potential impact is analyzed under several operation modes. Results show that while the DG can contribute to the improvement of voltage profile and power loss reduction, an inappropriate location and sizing of it may lead to an increase in power losses and congestion in the network.

Keywords : congestion; distributed generation; power losses; voltage profile.
