Twenty-five years ago the first cases of infection by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the development of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were described. The first manifestations that were considered as markers of the latter process were the opportunistic infections produced generally by microorganism considered non-pathogens for humans. Among such opportunistic infections the fungi were prominent. Pneumocystis jirovecii (earlier P. carinii), Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans and Histoplasma capsulatum were often found. Nowadays and despite of the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and the development of new proceedings and diagnostic techniques, HIV infection continues to exhibit high morbidity and mortality rates in countries with low economic resources due to the patient’s limited access to such advances. This review focuses on clinical aspects and new diagnostic advances concerning opportunistic fungal infections in patients that live with the HIV-AIDS.
