Abstract

CUERVO, SONIA ISABEL; CORTES, JORGE ALBERTO  and  GUALTERO, SANDRA MILENA. AIDS-defining Neoplams. Infect. [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.4, pp.289-293. ISSN 0123-9392.

Near 36% of HIV infected patients developed neoplasms in the early years of the AIDS epidemic. Kaposi’ sarcoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma were 95% of these neoplasms and they were included in the CDC classification of AIDS defining illnesses since 1985. With the introduction of the combined antiretroviral therapy, the incidence of AIDS related neoplasms has shown an important lowering, although only one million people has access to these therapies around the world. In this concise review the main epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic issues of the AIDS-defining neoplams are presented.

Keywords : neoplasms; HIV infection; acquired immunodeficiency syndrome; AIDS; highly active antiretroviral therapy; Kaposi’ sarcoma; non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
