Introduction:
Currently, very little is known about the associations between Bordetella spp. and respiratory viruses in the pediatric population, coinfections that lead to longer hospital stays, intensive care unit care, and severity of symptoms that can lead to mortality. The objective of this review was to analyze coinfections between Bordetella spp. and respiratory viruses associated with their impact on the health of children under 18 years of age.
Materials and Methods:
This study was a systematic review and meta-analysis. A search was carried out in databases (PubMed, Scopus, Springer, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library), where articles that met the selection criteria were selected. The methodological quality of the scientific evidence was evaluated and information on the variables of interest was extracted.
Results:
25 articles from different continents were included. The frequency of coinfection was 16.5% in all selected studies. Secondary analysis was performed for the presence of apnea with a frequency of 20.13% in coinfections; this variable was not present within the case definition of the viral ARI program.
Discussion:
Apnea should be considered in the surveillance of viral ARF as a differential diagnosis in the presence of RSV. It is worth highlighting the importance of simultaneously monitoring these two events of public health interest in Colombia and exploring the need for a combined differential diagnosis to support the understanding and standardization of treatments in children under 18 years of age.
