HERRERA-OLIVARES, Miguel Ángel et al. Factors associated with treatment adherence and clinical outcomes in tuberculosis patients in the Department of Atlántico, Colombia (2021-2023). Infect. [online]. 2025, vol.29, n.2, pp.95-105. Epub 13-Jun-2025. ISSN 0123-9392. https://doi.org/10.22354/24223794.1225.
Introduction:
Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, despite global efforts for its control and eradication. The aim of this study was to characterize TB in the Department of Atlántico (2021-2023) and analyze sociodemographic factors, clinical factors, and treatment adherence to inform public health decision-making.
Materials and Methods:
Observational, retrospective, and analytical study of patients over 18 years old with microbiologically confirmed TB. Sociodemographic and clinical variables, treatment adherence, and comorbidities were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression models.
Results:
A total of 1,133 patients were included, 62% of whom were male, with a median age of 42 years. Of these, 69% were enrolled in the subsidized health system. The most common comorbidities were malnutrition (18%) and HIV coinfection (12%). Treatment adherence was 89%, lower among patients without insurance and those with pulmonary TB. Thrombocytopenia and HIV coinfection were associated with worse clinical outcomes.
Discussion:
TB remains a significant challenge in Atlántico. It is crucial to optimize strategies for improving treatment adherence and managing comorbidities to reduce mortality and enhance clinical outcomes.
