Abstract

BORDA VILLEGAS, Catalina. Factors conditioning domestic childbirth in Bogotá, D.C. Rev. salud pública [online]. 2001, vol.3, n.2, pp.154-170. ISSN 0124-0064.

This paper presents the different motivations and circumstances under which childbirth has occurred from the perceptions and experiences of women who were interviewed. The conditioning factors can be classified into cultural aspects, socioeconomic conditions and quality of health services. Barriers to access for institutional attention of childbirth, attitudes and practices of women and midwives and the consequences derived from this event are identified. An enquiry was carried on women´s perceptions of domestic childbirth. Four trends were identified in women´s arguments: Resistance to western medical models, defense of sexual and reproductive rights, inequity in access to health services, search for safety and well-being during labor.

Keywords : Domestic labor; perception of quality of services; equity in health; reproductive and sexual rights; maternal health.
