Abstract

ARENCIBIA JORGE, RICARDO. Cesarean section: a historical account. Rev. salud pública [online]. 2002, vol.4, n.2, pp.170-185. ISSN 0124-0064.

A historical summary of the cesarean section is presented here, from the ancient ages to our times. The evolution of its surgical technique, the impact of anesthesia and antiseptic practices in its subsequent development and the reduction in perinatal mortality as a consequence of the discovery of antibiotics and ultrasound, are described. The contributions of Porro and Sänger to the success of the operation are also described, as well as the extraperitoneal techniques and the segmentary cesarean surgery. Finally, the current techniques and indications for this surgical procedure are discussed.

Keywords : Cesarean section; history; obstetrics.
