Objective
To analyze the relationship between the need for health services and the use of mental health services in Colombia.
Methods
The prevalence of mental disorders, as determined by the National Mental Health Survey (ENSM-2015), was compared to the registry of patients treated for the diagnosis of mental and behavioral disorders in the Information System (SISPRO-2013), which contains the individual health service delivery records (RIPS) of all persons who used the services of the health system in one year.
Results
The prevalence of mental disorders estimated according to ENSM for the Colombian population older than seven years was 4.02%, while the prevalence of health care obtained from SISPRO was 1.56%. This means that the percentage of the population that is not receiving care from the health system is 61.1%. Of 1 695 726 people with mental disorders, only 38.9% received mental health care.
Conclusion
Most people with mental disorders in Colombia do not receive mental health care from the healthcare system.
