SOUZA SANT'ANNA, Samuel et al. Repercussions in the family context of patients with prostate cancer. Rev. salud pública [online]. 2022, vol.24, n.5, pp.1-.  Epub 01-Jul-2023. ISSN 0124-0064.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rsap.v24n5.65435.

Objective

To analyze the repercussions in the family context of patients with prostate cancer.

Method

A qualitative descriptive study was carried out with ten men diagnosed with prostate cancer and with a family relationship, who were enrolled in the Out of Home Treatment Program (PDT) of the city of Ipiaú, Bahia. The data was collected through interviews, using a semi-structured script, and visits were made to the participants' homes.

Results

The highest incidence of prostate cancer occurs in men aged over 70 years, compared to those in younger age groups. Prostate carcinoma primarily affects men over the age of 65, with a higher incidence rate in black men than in white men. A family history of prostate cancer is a major risk factor for developing the disease. Despite this, many men are reluctant to undergo screening exams due to misinformation, prejudice, or fear of the unknown. This reluctance can significantly impact their quality of life.

Conclusion

The study highlighted the importance of family involvement in the process of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, as it can help patients overcome the various challenges they face. Additionally, the study identified the significance of proper care during treatment, which can significantly improve the patient's overall experience.
