Abstract

ROJAS, Mauricio. "No" to the lawyer- "better the doctor": the social image of the legal professional. Estud. Socio-Juríd [online]. 2009, vol.11, n.2, pp.281-298. ISSN 0124-0579.

The professions have images which are part of their social representations. This article shows the results of research into the social value of the legal profession and legal professional, as applied in the general population. The social devaluation of crucial subjects, in the exercise of the profession stands out: ethics, solidarity, honesty and humility. These are ambiguous situations because professionals enjoy great prestige. Their success (and even their attire) indicate a essential elements of their professional status which constitute a natural framework of meaning by which they demonstrate the ostentation of the power of their profession to control people's lives. University formation must be more effective and relate to the social and personal situations that must face the professional in a complex and competitive labour market.

Keywords : Sociology of professions; social image; social representation; law.
