Abstract

RODRIGUEZ-RODRIGUEZ, SAMUEL. Contingent individual, anguished individual. Metaphysical and literary considerations in Espido Freire’s fiction. discus.filos [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.31, pp.149-166. ISSN 0124-6127.  https://doi.org/10.17151/difil.2017.18.31.9.

Most philosophi cal systems pay no heed to substance and contingence before ideal and infi nitude. In these pages, we return to other authors and plumb the depths of the contradictory synthesis about human being as a confl uence of the Kierkegaardian moment, where infi nitude and fi nitude, time and eternity, liberty and necessity tear. Literature, aesthetically organized words, forms this synthesis. On this occasion we take the literary production of Espido Freire (Bilbao, 1974) as point of reference in our research about the contingent individual. The way towards contingence leads to despair, to an anguished individual. However, the lovely Unamunian “tragic hug” which would allow -like in the Nietzschean tragedy- the harmony of contraries, seems to remain an eternal pain in Espido Freire’s work.

Keywords : contingence; anguish; synthesis; moment; “tragic hug”; Espido Freire.
