Introduction:

In the face of cardiovascular disease, choosing an invasive procedure as a treatment constitutes a stressful experience for the patient and his or her family for the risk of complications that increase his or her morbidity or mortality.

Objective:

To determine the coping and adaptation capacity of the primary family caregivers of patients undergoing intra invasive procedures.

Materials and methods:

A descriptive transversal study was made with 230 primary caregivers of patients undergoing the process. A sociodemographic survey and the scale of measurement of the process of coping and adaptation of caller Roy in Spanish abbreviated version were used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

Results:

The average age of caregivers was 40.8 years and 93.9% were male. According to the global Score (GS), from the total family principal caregivers, 47% (PG: 0-56) and 50% (PG: 57-70) presented low and medium capacity for coping and adaptation respectively.

Conclusion:

The main family caregivers presented a low and medium capacity for coping and adaptation, a condition that prevents them from understanding the stress they are subjected to, responding adequately to focal stimuli, facilitating recovery and rehabilitation of the disease.
