Resumen
CORREA, Juliana Sicuro. Institutional enclaves as potential public spaces: the archipelago in the city. Bitácora Urbano Territorial [online]. 2021, vol.31, n.3, pp.53-66. Epub 20-Sep-2021. ISSN 0124-7913. https://doi.org/10.15446/bitacora.v31n3.87768.
A peculiar situation in the city of Rio de Janeiro -the presence of an 'exceptional figure' in the continuous urban fabric of an intensely urbanized neighborhood- gave rise to the hypothesis that institutional spaces with a character of isolation (enclaves) may play an important role in the qualification of the urban space and in the promotion of collective life. The analysis of aerial photographs and cadastral maps of the city revealed other institutional enclaves, implanted in the urban periphery in the beginning of the 20th century, which interacted with the expansion of the city. These other enclaves have also given rise to exceptional figures in the unban fabric of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Based on this observation, it is argued here that the concept of archipelago can account for this set of spaces. A discussion is opened concerning urban planning with the aim of shedding light on the potentialities of the urban form of contemporary cities with regard to the production of new types of public spaces.
