Florianópolis and its neighborhood Jurerê Internacional trigger the sense of utopia in face of the assumed urban chaos of Brazilian cities. This article analyzes the formation of this "planned community", contrasting its promotion discourse and its socio-spatial context. To this end, the research methods included document analyzes, archive research, interviews, field surveys and the analysis of news related to the case. As a result, it was found that, in addition to planning and implementing Jurerê Internacional, the entrepreneurial group manages its urbanization, causing conflicts between its profitability objectives and the residents' interests of exclusivity. Second, there are environmental and socio-spatial issues that go against the city's and the neighborhood's image, exposing contradictions in the discourse about these places. Finally, in this case, utopia is not opposed to the existing reality; on the contrary, it appears to reinforce it. Thus, even without physical barriers, there are invisible walls in Jurerê Internacional that reinforce the inequality and socio-spatial segregation that characterize the Brazilian cities. With images spectacularized by local and international media, the sense of utopia in Florianópolis and Jurerê Internacional challenges us to think about the future of cities and the social dynamics engendered by contemporary urban planning.
