Abstract

The progression of chronic disease in people who suffer from it has allowed family caregivers emerge as a form of natural care for human beings. However, this work is invisible, difficult and in some cases rewarding for a person who takes this role.
Objective:
To develop an instrument that allows to measure the construct of adoption of the family caregiver role of a person with chronic disease.
Materials and method:
It was developed in phases of literature review, conceptual bases establishment and description of items. Results: Two research which were carried out between 2007 and 2012 were integrated, the findings were contrasted with the transitions theory of Meleis A, and 22 items of the ROL instrument (Work, Organization and Responses before the Role) were constructed.
Conclusions:
The validity and reliability phases of the instrument must be continued in order to show theoretical solidity.
