PINEDA HIGUITA, Sonia Elena  y  MENDOZA PINZON, Blanca Rosmary. RESPIRATORY INFECTION IN PEDIATRIC CANCER PATIENTS IN A TERTIARY REFERRAL HOSPITAL IN MEDELLÍN. Investig. andina [online]. 2020, vol.22, n.41, pp.87-96.  Epub 24-Feb-2021. ISSN 0124-8146.

Introduction. Most childhood cancer cases occur in Latin America and the Caribbean. The primary location is the hematolymphoid. The pediatric cancer patient has a higher risk of respiratory infections of multiple etiology. Objective. To determine respiratory infections in pediatric cancer patients in a tertiary referral hospital in Medellín, 2014-2016. Materials and methods. A descriptive, retrospective study to evaluate the medical records of patients diagnosed with leukemia and solid tumors admitted to the General Hospital of Medellín during 2014-2016. A descriptive and bivariate analysis was carried out. The institutional ethics committee endorsed this research. Results. Twenty-one medical records were evaluated, finding that 57.1 % corresponded to respiratory infection of the lower tract, such as pneumonia (42.85 %), pleural effusion, tracheitis, and bronchitis (4.76 % each). Upper respiratory infection occurred in 42.8 % as rhinopharyngitis. The type of diagnosis with the highest percentage was acute lymphoid leukemia with 52.38 %. Conclusion. Lower respiratory infection, such as pneumonia, continues to be a cause of morbidity and mortality in children with cancer and more frequently in acute lymphoid leukemia with neutropenia.
