GONZALEZ GONZALEZ, Olivia Esperanza  e  PATARROYO DURAN, Nubia Isolina. SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES REQUESTED BY THE SERVICE SECTOR IN BOGOTA TO THE NEWLY GRADUATED INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER. Cienc. Ing. Neogranad. [online]. 2014, vol.24, n.1, pp.163-179. ISSN 0124-8170.

The study of competencies is approached worldwide by professionals and organizations from different disciplines, who are interested in improving or upgrading educational processes. For that reason, a group of young researchers, DIGESOR, from the Organization Design and Management research line, attached to the research group GINTECPRO from the Industrial Engineering Program at the Universidad El Bosque, considered relevant to identify the requirements and current perceptions regarding the specific competencies requested by the service sector in Bogota to the newly graduated industrial engineer. For this investigation, many documents from different sources related to the research topic were studied: Tuning Project, Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística (DANE); Consejo Nacional de Acreditación (CNA); and Asociación Colombiana de Facultades de Ingeniería (ACOFI), among others. Based on these sources, we designed a tool that allows us to identify the specific competencies that interest the most the small, medium-sized, and large enterprises and companies in the sector. Information obtained shows how the newly graduated industrial engineer starts working in the service sector, the means used by recruiters to find candidates, the specific competencies required by employers, and the organizational level, areas and positions at which they perform the most. These results are useful for the reorientation of the Industrial Engineering syllabi used by higher education institutions. In this case, a more relevant training of the future engineers would be promoted according to the needs and expectations of the service sector.
