Abstract

RAMIREZ-SEPULVEDA, Daniel; CANO-SALDANA, Leonardo  and  AMARILES-LOPEZ, Cristhian. Comparison between ACI 318-19 and NSR-10 for the structural design of concrete frames in high seismic hazard zones. Cienc. Ing. Neogranad. [online]. 2022, vol.32, n.2, pp.115-129.  Epub Dec 30, 2022. ISSN 0124-8170.  https://doi.org/10.18359/rcin.5933.

This work conducted a comparative analysis of the Colombian Seismic Resistant Standard NSR-10 and the ACI 318-19 regulation (the basis of the next Title C of the NSR standard currently under development). In this comparison, the current technical requirements present in both regulations for reinforced concrete portal frame systems in high seismic hazard zones were detailed. Initially, a comparative analysis was made between the body of Title C of NSR-10 and ACI 318-19, which showed the differences in the arrangement of the chapters present in each regulation. From this analysis, a comparative matrix and the road maps corresponding to each chapter were obtained, which facilitated the search and understanding of the differences found in the arrangement of the chapters. Then, a second comparative analysis was made and the requirements for elements belonging to structures with special energy dissipation capacity were compared one by one. From this second comparison, the most relevant differences between the specifications of both standards are detailed, with a brief justification of the changes found. Finally, we proceeded to the structural design of two reinforced concrete frame buildings, following the guidelines of both standards in order to make a final comparison of the reinforcement amounts and concrete volumes by means of which the economic impact generated by the application of the new specifications established in ACI 318-19 were analyzed. A percentage difference in a cost increase of 3.3% was found. This is relevant data for engineers, designers, and constructors since it clearly indicates the impact these changes will have on the future NSR.

Keywords : normative comparative analysis; NSR-10; ACI 318-19; seismic-resistant standards; concrete structures; concrete frames.
