Abstract

NAVARRO ESPANA, Jorge L.; OCAMPO LOPEZ, Carmen E.  and  SAUMETH DE LAS SALAS, Luz A.. CONCENTRATION AND PRICES INTHEWORLD MARKET PALM OIL 1985-2005. Tend. [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.2, pp.143-162. ISSN 0124-8693.

This paper studies the structure of the global market for palm oil, and his influence on the price level. For this, we calculate market concentration indices and correlation statistics to establish causality relations. The main results show that although this market is highly concentrated, this does not seem to affect the price. The explanation given is that this situation is caused by the high substitution between palm, sunflower and soybeans oils, and the fact that entry barriers are not high enough.
