Abstract

OSORIO GIRALDO, Inés; GUTIERREZ, Pablo Andrés  and  MARIN MONTOYA, Mauricio. Review: Spongospora subterranea f.sp. subterranea and its Associated Virus Potato mop-top virus (PMTV), Two Re-emerging Pathogens of Potato Crops in Colombia. Rev. Fac. Nac. Agron. Medellín [online]. 2012, vol.65, n.1, pp.6361-6378. ISSN 0304-2847.

Abstract. Potato is one of the most important crops in Colombia, comprising 128.701 ha and a total production of 2.3 million t year-1. There are several phytopathological problems affecting this crop, however, the soil protozoan Spongospora subterranea f.sp. subterranea (Sss), the causal agent of powdery scab, stands out due to its recent reemergence. Powdery scab can seriously deteriorate tuber quality and reduce production as a result of root and tuber-damage. Moreover, Sss is a vector for Potato mop-top virus (PMTV), a prevalent virus in the Andean region and quarentenary in several countries. This paper presents a state of the art review on these two pathogens with special emphasis on findings about genetic variability, detection methods and their effect on potato production in Colombia. Hopefully, this review will call the attention of state organizations, potato associations, technical assistants and farmers on the increased importance of these pathogens in production of potato in Colombia. Additionally, this paper may help support tuber-seed certification and genetic improvement programs currently underway.
