A greenhouse bioassay was carried out to determine the mycorrhizal dependency of barcino (Calophyllum brasiliense Cambers), using a completely randomized experimental design. Treatments were arranged in a 3 x 2 factorial design with five repetitions, that consisted of combinations of three concentrations of phosphorus (P) in the soil solution (0.002, 0.02, and 0.2 mg l-1), with two levels of mycorrhizal inoculation with Glomus agreggatum Schenck and Smith, modified by Koske (inoculated and not innoculated). Leaf P content as a function of time was the response variable. Shoot dry matter (MSA), shoot P content (PTA), mycorrhizal colonization of roots, and mycorrhizal dependency (DM) were measured at harvest. The results indicated that foliar P content did not vary significantly with micorrizal inoculation. The total P content absorbed did not vary, nor did aerial dry mass. Micorrizal colonization with G. agreggatum was not documented in any of the treatments. Finally, barcino showed no mycorrhizal dependence to G. aggreggatum, placing this species in the independent category, at least under the conditions of this study.
