Abstract

LAVERDE-R., OSCAR; STILES, F. GARY  and  MUNERA-R., CLAUDIA. New records and updated inventory of the avifauna of the Serranía de las Quinchas, an important bird area (IBA) in Colombia . Caldasia [online]. 2005, vol.27, n.2, pp.247-265. ISSN 0366-5232.

We present and evaluate 60 new bird records from the Serrania de las Quinchas, Boyacá, Colombia , including 14 range extensions and local extensions for 20 species, including four extensions of the known altitudinal range, with comments on the most important of these. With the updated inventory, we evaluate the avian community of these mountains, comparing three study sites using an ecological index proposed by Stiles & Bohórquez. Finally, according to the criteria for Important Bird Areas, we highlight the importance of this region as a key area that needs strong conservation strategies to preserve a large proportion of the middle Magdalena Valley avian community over an altitudinal gradient.

Keywords : Birds; Colombia; conservation; IBAs; Middle Magdalena valley; threatened species.
