Abstract

RODRIGUEZ-BARRIOS, JAVIER; OSPINA-TORRES, RODULFO  and  GUTIERREZ, JUAN DAVID. Inputs and transport of organic matter in a tropical mountain stream. Bogotá, Colombia. Caldasia [online]. 2008, vol.30, n.2, pp.421-440. ISSN 0366-5232.

Quantity and variation of inputs -lateral and vertical- and transport of particulate organic matter (POM) were estimated over a five month- period in a section of a tropical mountain stream, in the eastern hills of Bogotá, Colombia, with emphasis on the effects of precipitation and flow over inputs and transport of POM. Vertical inputs of coarse POM (vertical CMOP) and lateral inputs of CPOM (lateral CPOM) and fine POM (lateral FPOM ) were 450.8 g.m-2 , 191 g.m-1 and 12.65 g.m-1 of ash free dry matter (AFDM), respectively. Lateral FPOM showed a clear tendency to increase with the intensity of precipitation; the same tendency appeared inthe vertical CPOM but atypical values affected its statistical correspondence. Transport of CPOM and MOPF during low discharge periods was 0.44 g.m-3 and 1.13 g.m-3 respectively and 0.102 g.m-3 and 3.1 g.m-3 during high discharge periods. FPOM was 30 times greater than CCPOM over the five months of sampling. Differences in FPOM transport by the stream channel were observed between low and high discharge periods. No statistical relationship was evident between discharge magnitude and POM transport fractions.

Keywords : Organic Matter; Precipitation; Neotropics; Andean mountain stream.
