MARTINEZ-QUESADA, EDDY. Study and evaluation of plant communities in the Santa Lucía beach (Cuba), before and after the step of hurricane Ike. Caldasia [online]. 2011, vol.33, n.1, pp.139-153. ISSN 0366-5232.

A study and evaluation of the plant communities from Santa Lucia beach, north of Camagüey province (Cuba), before and after the step of hurricane Ike was done. The results showed that some communities disappeared; others reduced or extended their range. Others, however, are new. The species diversity did not change considerably, but the dominance of these did. Most of the species are widely distributed and easy to adapt to several types of substrata, which together with the absence of a barrier, favors the resettling of the habitat by almost the same composition of species that previously occupied the area. The predominance of the hemicriptophytes is a direct consequence of the structural characteristics of the communities, determined by the dominant climatic and edaphic conditions.

Palavras-chave : Plant communities; monitoring; littoral zone; impacts of hurricane Ike.
