Melastomataceae is one of the most representative botanical families worldwide with around 180 genera and 4500 species. In Colombia we can find around 900 species from sea level to páramo. The sexual propagation of these plants is complicated due to the scarce information that is known about their biology and their germination. The objective of this work was to determine the differences in the germination, growth, and survival of the melastomataceae species planted in laboratory conditions and using traditional propagation. We worked with Tibouchina grossa, Miconia ligustrina, and Miconia squa-mulosa. The external and internal morphological description of the seeds of each species was made. A total of 50 seeds were planted in Petri dishes with four replications per species and were kept under controlled conditions, 30 germinated seeds were monitored for growth once a week for four weeks; seedling survival was evaluated transplanting 30 individuals to a substrate and following them once a moth for four months. Likewise, the seeds were sown in the substrate under greenhouse conditions. Miconia squamulosa had the highest percentage of germination in both laboratory and substrate with 74 % and 91 %, followed by Miconia ligustrina with 30 and 47 % and Tibouchina grossa with 21 and 44 % respectively. The three species were morphologically similar having small seeds without endosperm. In the three species there was higher germination, growth, and survival in the traditional propagation tests, these are the most suitable planting conditions for propagation of these species.
