Type specimens are herbarium specimens on which a validly published description of a new plant species is made. We made a survey of the type specimens of the Leguminosae, subfamily Cercidoideae species collected in Colombia and deposited in Colombian and foreign herbaria. Cercidoideae subfamily is made up of 14 genera of which two are represented in Colombia (Bauhinia and Schnella). Twelve species and two varieties of these genera have been described using collections from Colombia. The specimens in these collections have been distributed in 19 herbaria worldwide while in Colombian herbaria there is only one holotype and one isotype. We present additional data on the species analyzed including their endemism, habits, geographic distribution, and conservation status and we provide information on the current state of knowledge on the two genera of the subfamily present in the country.
