Abstract

CASTILLO, Rodrigo. The Antarctic oscillation: its influence on interannual variability of rainfall in Costa Rica. Rev. acad. colomb. cienc. exact. fis. nat. [online]. 2021, vol.45, n.176, pp.875-900.  Epub Feb 04, 2022. ISSN 0370-3908.  https://doi.org/10.18257/raccefyn.1434.

The main objective of this research was to study the influence of the Antarctic oscillation (AAO) on the interannual climate rainfall variability in Costa Rica. I used monthly scale precipitation data from surface meteorological stations (1979-2017), the ERA-Interim reanalyses (1979-2017), and from remote sensors with the PERSIANN-CDR (1983-2018). I assessed the correlation coefficients of precipitation data sets and AAO indices, as well the partial correlation to rule out the possible forcing that El Niño-Southern oscillation (ENSO) may have as the dominant mode of regional climate variability. Additionally, I used the composites difference technique to examine the spatial climate teleconnection patterns associated with AAO influencing Costa Rican territory. The study found a strong positive (negative) statistical correlation mainly in the Costa Rican South and Central Pacific (Northern Costa Rica) during the months DJF and SON (JJA) when the minimum annual precipitation cycle for DJF and the maximum for SON and JJA was recorded in these areas. The most relevant results were the out-of-phase most significant correlations between the precipitation for DJF, SON, and JJA with the AAO indices for SON, JJA, and MAM, respectively, which were still significant despite the possible influence of ENSO.
