Abstract

There are still gaps in the knowledge of the fauna in some places in Colombia, particularly regarding the lepidopterological diversity in remote locations with limited access, such as the indigenous reserves of the Amazon region. In this context, our objective in this study was to characterize the diversity of diurnal butterflies in two areas of the department of Vaupés, which correspond to the indigenous communities of Puerto Inayá, Wasay, Puerto Paloma, and Villa Fátima, and in two weather seasons. We conducted samplings during the winter season from July to September 2017, and during the summer season from January to March 2018. In each community, we collected specimens for five days between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. with butterfly nets and van Someren Rydon (VSR) traps using two types of bait (fermented fruit and decomposed fish) distributed vertically in three strata (understory [1m], intermediate stratum [5m], and canopy [10m]). We registered 2,199 specimens corresponding to 272 species and 123 subspecies, 6 families, and 18 subfamilies, and reported two new records and three distribution extensions for the country. With the entomological net, we registered 76% of the abundance. The total richness estimated for the Vaupés increased by 559 species and 233 subspecies. At the spatial and temporal level, the species composition was significantly different in the four communities and the two seasons, although there were overlaps since several species are shared.
