Resumen

ORTIZ, Juan C.  y  CONDE, Mario. El huracán que pasó sobre la Isla de San Andrés en 1911 The hurricane that affected San Andrés Island in 1911. Rev. acad. colomb. cienc. exact. fis. nat. [online]. 2022, vol.46, n.180, pp.795-806.  Epub 20-Sep-2023. ISSN 0370-3908.  https://doi.org/10.18257/raccefyn.1743.

This study examined the winds and wave dynamics over the Island of San Andrés during the passage of the unnamed hurricane of 1911. Wind and wave fields were generated using a parametric wind model coupled to the wave generation and propagation model SWAN. The wind and wave models were calibrated and validated with field data recorded by an oceanographic buoy during the passage of Hurricane Matthew in 2016. We found that the highest intensity winds (close to 200 km/h) were produced 22 km from the north coast of San Andrés and 65 km from the south coast of Providencia. Moreover, we found that the waves were smaller than those generated by hurricanes Iota in 2020 and Joan in 1988. Due to the extension of the coastal platform of San Andrés and the direction of the waves produced by the hurricane, the storm surge associated with the 1911 hurricane may have been more significant than other hurricanes. This methodology can be used to reconstruct hurricanes where information is scarce and, thus, improve our ability to predict the coastal response to the potential impact of future hurricanes.

Palabras clave : Historical hurricane; Caribbean Sea; Extreme waves; Extreme winds.
