Abstract

NAVARRO VALENCIA, MARTHA CECILIA. UNIONS, MOTHERHOOD AND SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH OF AFROCOLOMBIAN WOMEN IN BUENAVENTURA. AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2009, vol.45, n.1, pp.38-68. ISSN 0486-6525.

In this article I explore marital union, motherhood and sexual and reproductive health issues among poor Afrocolombian women in the city of Buenaventura. Based on a case study and oral testimonies, I describe and analyze the experience of extramarital relations, birth control, pregnancy and maternity in adolescence and adulthood. I also study some of the processes that shape and build women’s subjectivity in order to understand the dynamics of gender relations and contribute to the analysis of existing discourses of race, gender and class discrimination.

Keywords : Afrocolombians; Colombian Pacific; social exclusion; body; sexuality; marriage.
