Abstract

GARCIA BECERRA, ANDRÉS. HIGH HEELS, SILICON, HORMONES, AND OTHER CRITIQUES TO THE SEX-GENDER SYSTEM. FEMINISMS AND EXPERIENCES OF TRANSSEXUALS AND TRANSVESTITES. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2009, vol.45, n.1, pp.119-146. ISSN 0486-6525.

This article presents elements of feminist theory in order to think ethnographically the subject of body construction and identities of transsexuals and transvestites in Bogotá. A central argument is how these experiences reproduce and question the cultural sex-gender system. Habitually this topic is treated by clinical disciplines -psychiatry, endocrinology- which ignore its multiple social dimensions. Here I propose a gender studies approach and queer theory to diverse experiences of transsexuals and transvestites, taking into consideration the articulations of body interventions, gender identity constructions, and the health system in Colombia.

Keywords : transsexuals; transvestites; gender identity; body; health; feminist theory; queer theory.
