Abstract

OSPINA ENCISO, ANDRÉS FELIPE. SACRED SACRILEGE: NARRATIVE, DEATH AND RITUAL IN THE TRAGEDIES OF ARMERO. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2013, vol.49, n.1, pp.177-198. ISSN 0486-6525.

Several events with a similar narrative structure are overlapped in order to delve into a strained and permanent relationship between tragedy and sacredness, in connection with a series of critical events for the political and religious history of Colombia. The natural disaster which disappeared the town of Armero (Tolima) in 1985 seems to be related with another tragic event which affected this town in the dark days of April 1948. On the occasion of the death of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, it was killed Pedro María Ramírez, the priest of Armero. With that crime it began a complex trace of experiences and stories which constituted scenes of ritual sacrifice.

Keywords : Armero; sacredness; sacrifice; sacrilege.
