Abstract

DIAZ MONTEALEGRE, GABRIELA. "WHEN WE USED TO BE MORE NÜKÁK". AN APPROACH TO THE NÜKÁK PERCEPTION OF PHOTOGRAPHY. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2013, vol.49, n.2, pp.131-164. ISSN 0486-6525.

Abstract This text explores the reactions that a group of nükák people from Guaviare, Colombia, assume when they see pictures taken of them by researchers as of the late 1980s. Based on these responses I analyze photography as a memory and mirror device, having an enormous economic and symbolic power in a context where forced displacement, the visit of tourists and the circulation of stereotypes put them in a position of subordination and exoticism before other groups with whom they interact in a daily basis. From a critical posture I elaborate on the process of cultural transformation they live as individuals and as indigenous people.

Keywords : photography; nükák; cultural transformation; memory; mirror.
