GIRALDO TENORIO, Hernando Javier; DIAZ ASTAIZA, Mateo Fernando y CORRALES OTERO, Germán Andrés. Social inequalities, production, and prehispanic household consumption in Popayán valley, Colombia. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2023, vol.59, n.1, pp.140-172. Epub 01-Ene-2023. ISSN 0486-6525. https://doi.org/10.22380/2539472x.2364.
This article evaluates the role of the economic control in the emergence or maintenance of the social differences in the prehispanic political unit settled in the valle de Popayán during the 1-1537 AD period. This evaluation is made by comparing some archaeological correlates of production and consumption of goods between the elites and commoner's domestic units. The results indicate that the leadership position was no related to the production of prestige or utilitarian goods as previous models suggests for the prehispanic political units of Colombian southwest. Therefore, it's proposed that the archaeological model of social change in the pre-Hispanic societies of Colombian Southwest, which considers that elite groups based their power on the power on the centralization of the production of prestige or utilitarian goods, is not appropriate for the entire region.
