This article analyzes the strategies employed by Colombian academic Gregorio Hernández de Alba (1904-1973) to prepare for an anthropological career within the framework of an emerging disciplinary field in Colombia, accompanied by his involvement in governmental management. The case is examined from a biographical perspective anchored in the postulates of the history of anthropology and the anthropology of anthropology, allowing for a contextual analysis of the emergence of Hernández de Alba’s interest in Indigenous issues, his participation in various state projects related to the management of archaeological assets and Indigenous policies, as well as his role in the institutionalization of the discipline.
