Resumen
MORALES, Natalia Soledad; GALLIGANI, Paula y BARRIENTOS, Gustavo. Diagenesis at the Bone’s Lowest Levels of Organization: State of the Art and Approaches in Zooarchaeology. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2025, vol.61, n.2, e2824. Epub 01-Mayo-2025. ISSN 0486-6525. https://doi.org/10.22380/2539472x.2824.
Diagenetic alterations include the physical and chemical changes experienced by organic remains (e.g., hard tissues) under burial conditions. In zooarchaeology, research aimed at evaluating the effects of diagenetic processes operating at the lowest levels of bone organization-which determine the probability of survival in archaeological deposits-has, to date, seen little development. With the aim of promoting and encouraging the practice of diagenetic research, particularly in Latin America, this paper presents an updated overview of studies on bone diagenesis in terrestrial environments. The fundamentals of bone diagenesis are reviewed, and the parameters used to measure it are described. Finally, a strategy is proposed for approaching this issue particularly useful in contexts with limited access to resources, such as that characteristic of our region.
