Resumen
ABOITIZ HIDALGO, Uzuri. From Autonomy to Dependency: Youth Precariousness and Intergenerational Solidarity after Austerity Policies in Errenteria, Basque Country. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2025, vol.61, n.3, e2931. Epub 01-Sep-2025. ISSN 0486-6525. https://doi.org/10.22380/2539472x.2931.
The austerity policies implemented in the wake of the 2008 economic crisis have exacerbated the structural problems of youth precariousness in the Basque context, affecting young people’s ability to sustain their life projects autonomously. As a consequence, informal forms of intergenerational support have been reinforced, with parents supporting adult children even when they are employed, having families, and living independently. In this article, I analyze the new patterns of moral obligations and material transfers by focusing on their entanglement with public policies and broader configurations of economy and power. Based on fieldwork conducted in Errenteria, a deindustrialized city in the Basque Country (Spanish State), between 2017 and 2018, I argue that the strengthening of family solidarity represents a shift in the structure of responsibility, and therefore, in the conditions of social reproduction.
