Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2025, vol.61, n.3, e2951. Epub 01-Sep-2025. ISSN 0486-6525. https://doi.org/10.22380/2539472x.2951.
This article presents findings from research focused on the alumbrados, collective rituals of remembrance for the deceased held in the cemetery of Mompox, Colombia. This vibrant and theatrical expression unfolds through a sequence of structured moments, with the analytical attention centered on the theatricalized rite of the Animero. This figure, covered with thanatosemiotic elements, shapes the ritual’s development and reinforces the collective imaginary; he appears as a link between eternity and the world of the faithful in the Mompox cemetery. The semiotic analysis explores the layers of meaning embedded in the Animero’s ritual, highlights the significance of mourning for the living, and characterizes this cultural practice as one that sustains a shared system of belief among its social actors.
