Based on the assumption that there is no reason to imagine that the anti-state mechanisms identified by Pierre Clastres in Amerindian Indigenous societies are limited to that particular “type” of society, this presentation seeks to isolate key principles, themes, and lines of force in Clastres’ thought. This effort is guided by my own research experience in the field of Afro-Brazilian religions and politics, as well as by inquiries into the history of anthropological thought.
