Abstract

VALENCIA AGUDELO, Germán Darío  and  CUARTAS CELIS, Deiman. Economic exclusion and violence in Colombia, 1990-2008: a review. Perf. de Coyunt. Econ. [online]. 2009, n.14, pp.113-134. ISSN 1657-4214.

This article makes a revision of the literature that has been produced in Colombia in the last two decades on the relationship between economic exclusion and violence. It shows how, starting in 1995 with the work of Malcom Deas and Fernando Gaitan, the analyses of violence have been divided into two groups: those which argue that it is caused by subjective factors (rational individuals who use violence as a means of gaining benefits and power) and those which emphasize objective conditions (pointing to inequality, poverty and weaknesses of the State in responding to social demands, among others, as the causes of violence). The article is placed in the last perspective; however, it proposes that, in order to have a more comprehensive and more realistic view, one that produces effective solutions to violence in Colombia, both perspectives need to be taken into account.

Keywords : Economic exclusion; inequity; poverty; violence; crime rate.
