One of the challenges of the researches about Brazilian rural sector is building diagnostics to assess the complexity of social and cultural bases where they are developed. Such analyzes should take into account the interfaces between the proposition of public policies for family farming and its effective implementation by farmers and managers. This text presents an analysis of the main challenges faced by family farming cooperatives associated with the National Union of Cooperatives of Family Farming and Solidarity Economy (UNICAFES), an organization linked to the social movements of family farmers created in 2005. In Brazil cooperatives emerged in the early twentieth century, however, despite its importance for development, including participation in the economy and society in Brazil is still very small when compared to other nations. Moreover, the initiatives of family farming cooperatives and inclusive economy were neglected by the model adopted in the country since the 1970s. To face some of these problems, popular sectors related to social movements of the family farming created UNICAFES, this entity aims to articulate and organize productive experiences of national economy that were being created throughout the country and did not find support in the traditional cooperatives and were facing strong resistance for effective incorporation and institutional sustainability. This organization that was formed with the intention of providing support to family farmers in the joint production chains linked with small property and national and inclusive economy sectors. The study presents the results of analyzes performed in the last five years of solidary cooperativism in Brazil.
