Abstract: this article reviews compassion as an essential requirement for humanized care, and addresses defining elements from its philosophical roots and its link to nursing practice. Objective: to reflect on compassion as an inherent attribute of humanized care, as reported in the literature. Materials and methods: reflection article for which a literature search and review was performed in specialized scientific databases, with descriptors and Boolean operators related to the topic. Results: useful conceptual elements are presented to adopt compassion as an ethical trait that should be promoted in training and academic work in the health sciences and, especially, in nursing.
