Objective: determine the prevalence of professional attrition and related factors among the emergency nursing staff at four health facilities in Cartagena, Colombia. Method: A transversal analytical study was designed. Professional attrition was measured with the Spanish version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory scale. The variables associated with professional attrition were controlled through logistic regression. Results: A total of 173 persons completed the questionnaire satisfactorily. The average age of the group was 34.5 years (DE=8.6). A total of 126 (72.4%) nurse's aides and 47 (27.6%) professional nurses took part. The prevalence of professional attrition was 26.6%. Job dissatisfaction (OR=22.80; IC95% 3.02-172.2) and under age 40 (OR=2.84; IC95% 1.28-8.82) were associated with professional attrition. Conclusion: The prevalence of professional attrition is high among the nursing staff at emergency services in Cartagena. Job dissatisfaction is associated to a great degree with professional attrition. More research in this field is needed.
